The H&K Mark 23, originally developed for the U.S. Special Operations Command, combines the precision of a custom-made pistol with some of the most rigorous operational demands ever required from a combat handgun. Reliability was paramount and the Mark 23 was required to demonstrate it could fire at least 2,000 mean rounds between stoppages (MRBS). Tests with both standard and +P ammunition resulted in an impressive MRBS range of 6027 to 15122-round. The Mark 23's endurance was equally remarkable, with a service life exceeding 30,000-round of +P cartridges. In accuracy testing, 450-round averaged a 1.44 inches grouping at 25m, with 65 groupings measuring less than 1 inches and four producing five rounds through the same hole. This unmatched reliability and performance can be attributed in part to an innovative O-ring on the barrel that seals it in the slide until unlocking. The Mark 23 also passed extreme environmental tests, including immersion in saltwater, exposure to salt-fog, sand-dust and mud and firing in temperatures ranging from +140 to -250 deg F. Thanks to a special maritime surface coating, the Mark 23 exceeded these demanding conditions, making it one of the most durable and reliable handguns ever built.
